In Wales, Healthcare and the NHS are devolved and the responsibility of the Labour Government in Cardiff.
Last year the UK Government gave Wales £19.2 BILLION - its largest funding settlement since devolution. For every £100 the UK Government spends per person in England, they give the Welsh Government £120. Yet many people on Anglesey find it hard to get a GP, hospital or dental appointment.
Since becoming your MP I have received thousands of letters and emails concerning inadequate health provision. That is why I recognise that it is important that I push for improvements to address to your concerns about ambulance waiting times, understaffing, poor mental health services and and other failures in the health system.
I have a background in health and that is why I:
- Meet regularly with the Chief Executive and top team of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) to highlight issues and identify solutions.
- Worked closely with the team representing Hwb Iechyd Cybi to recruit GPs where some of the most acute GP shortages on the island have been affecting the patient experience.
- Wrote to the Ministers at the MoD on behalf of the Welsh Ambulance Service when they needed additional armed forces resource to staff ambulances in the winter.
- Assisted with the introduction of local Covid vaccination clinics when GP surgeries were struggling to meet targets.
- Launched successful campaigns on mental health first aid and to bring defibrillators and defibrillator training to Anglesey.
I know that the NHS teams on the ground are doing what they can to treat local people, and I offer my sincere thanks for their hard work, but they are delivering services against a backdrop of extreme underfunding. For that reason I will continue to press for the best health services for local people.
