Freeports were a Conservative election commitment which we acted on when we won the election in 2019. It was also one of my personal commitments to the electorate of Ynys Môn.
As your voice in the heart of that Government I have been able to speak directly with Ministers and colleagues to ensure that Anglesey was granted freeport status.
In December 2020 I set up the Anglesey Freeport Bidding Consortium inviting key stakeholders including Stena, Bangor University, M-SParc and Anglesey Council to start positioning our bid. The competition for Welsh freeports had not even been opened but I was already positioning Ynys Môn for success.
Fast forward three years and we can see the fruits of my early work. The Government has announced that Anglesey’s bid for freeport status has been successful and after many months of hard work Stena Line and Anglesey Council have submitted the Outline Business Case for approval.
Anglesey Freeport is the start of our economic renaissance. It is estimated that it will attract up to 13,000 new jobs across North Wales and bring in £1bn investment. In the coming months we will start to see new opportunities spring up in the freeport’s designated tax and customs zones: the Prosperity Parc and Parc Cybi in Holyhead, M-SParc in Gaerwen and Rhosgoch near Amlwch.
