Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie has given this month’s Hidden Hero award to a Llangefni physiotherapist who volunteers to help people improve their health by walking.

Esther Cadogan runs the successful Physio Môn and was nominated by several members of her community who were impressed with her ‘get up and go’ and her commitment to local people.

In addition to working as a physiotherapist both for the NHS and for her own business, Esther also voluntarily set up Môn Walkers to encourage people to exercise as well as being a great place to meet people and socialise.

Those who nominated her said Esther went above and beyond to keep everyone motivated and active throughout the pandemic. She took her walking group online by setting goals and activities for people to do during lockdowns in their own gardens, or on their daily walks.

Esther said: “Four years ago, I set up a free walking group called Môn Walkers with the specific target of encouraging people who don’t do much exercise to get out walking together and making friends. There are many walking groups for people who are very active, but I felt there was a gap for those just getting started or only had the time or physical capability for shorter walks.

“We have raised over £3000 through walking-based fundraisers, most popular being our Santa Stroll Each year since we started. I’ve organised a toy collection for the local Women’s refuge at Christmas and it always amazes me how generous our supporters are.

“I have big aspirations for my clinic and am committed to also growing our walking club and using it to do as much good as possible. I’m fortunate to have an amazing supportive family without whom I couldn’t have achieved what we have so far. I’m very grateful to all who took the time to nominate me for this award.”

Virginia added: “Many congratulations to Esther who is a real community champion and a worthy Hidden Heroes winner. Her dedication to her profession and to her voluntary work helping people keep active is an inspiration.”
