Gerri Swift

A Llangaffo woman who helps educate drivers about keeping horses and their riders safe on the island’s roads is my January Hidden Hero.

Gerri Swift has been involved with horses for over 50 years and over the last few years she has been organising Pass Wide And Slow events on Anglesey.

The initiative was founded to raise awareness, educate and gain the attention of non-horsey folk on how and why to pass horses on the road. The background is that there has been an increase in horses and riders killed and injured on Britain’s roads.

By riding, driving and walking out as a highly visible group on the island, Gerri and her fellow horse riders hope to help people to understand why they must Pass Wide And Slow.

“I have seen the attitude of drivers change a lot over the years, mostly through genuine ignorance. Many people simply do not understand why you should slow to 10mph and give two metres where possible,” said Gerri.

“I became involved with the organisation a few years back and I have since co-ordinated the last two Pass Wide And Slow events. I am just starting on this year’s ride.

“This is something that is very important to me to try and educate drivers, as well as improving rider awareness. It is great to feel that in some small way, I may help people who have no choice but to ride on the road and keep the roads of Anglesey safer.”

Gerri has been an inspiration on the island when it comes to keeping riders and horses safe and educating drivers on what they should do when they encounter a horse.

The campaign she is so involved in is one I support and I am delighted Gerri is January’s Hidden Hero.

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
