Virginia Crosbie MP with Hidden Hero Vaughan Prytherch

An Amlwch farmer who has spent decades in voluntary and humanitarian service for veterans, the St John Ambulance and the Church of Wales is Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie’s October Hidden Hero.

Vaughan Prytherch and his family have farmed in the area since the 19th century and in 2018 he leased five acres of land to Caru Amlwch to create a community allotments scheme to help veterans. He also served the Normandy Veterans' Association as Public Relations coordinator for several years.

Vaughan has spent 40 years in the service of the Church in Wales and the Anglican Church including representing the Diocese of Bangor on both the governing and representative bodies of the Church in Wales.

The fluent Welsh speaker is currently the financial secretary and parochial treasurer of St Eleth's Church in Amlwch.

He has also been associated with St John Ambulance Cymru for upwards of five decades, including throughout the duration of the Covid 19 pandemic and is a Commander of the Order of St John.

He has even been on TV cast in the role of Goronwy Owen, the celebrated 18th century Anglesey-born clergyman and literary genius, in the documentary 'O Fon i Virginia' in 2003.

“Vaughan’s many decades of service in such wide-ranging roles close to his home and further afield makes him an ideal candidate to be one of my hidden heroes,” said Virginia.

“To have someone so dedicated to public service on our island is wonderful and I know Vaughan has no intention of stopping his important work in so many areas.

Vaughan added: “I am honoured to be our MP’s October’s Hidden Hero and I thank Mrs Crosbie for choosing me over so many other people who do so much for Ynys Môn.”
