Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie is supporting a new bill to help deliver improved 4 and 5G mobile coverage on the island.

The Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill includes changes to the Electronic Communications Code to speed up the rollout of 4G and 5G in places like Anglesey in what would be a substantial boost to the local economy.

Virginia heard about the proposed legislation when she attended an event organised by Speed Up Britain in Westminster this week. It is a cross-industry organisation working to deliver better mobile connectivity across the UK.

A recent report by the Centre for Policy Studies found that delays to the rollout of 5G could cost the UK over £40bn in lost economic output by 2027 and leave as many as 11 million households and businesses without vital digital connectivity.

“Backing this bill will enable improvements to happen more quickly on Anglesey through both the Shared Rural Network, which is going to deliver 4G coverage to 95% of the UK, and the next-generation 5G technology,” said Virginia.

“The pandemic has highlighted just how vital mobile connectivity is for the thousands of residents and businesses across Ynys Môn and patchy coverage causes frustration.

“Improving this infrastructure is a key priority for me, along with bringing jobs and investment to our island. I look forward to supporting the Bill. I hope it will deliver these changes as quickly as possible.”

Better Broadband for Ynys Môn

From my own experiences and the number of emails I know there are issues with broadband across Anglesey. Increased connectivity will go a long way to attract new jobs to the constituency, boosting the tourism and hospitality sector.

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
