Work to fix the Menai Bridge will be finished by the 200th anniversary of its construction in 2026, Ynys Môn MP Virginia
Crosbie has been told in an update.
Virginia met with Welsh Government, the bridge’s operator UK Highways A55 Ltd and the contractor Spencer Group
to hear about the schedule of works to ensure the bridge can remain in use following a very disruptive closure period
earlier this year.
The MP was told work commenced this month and hanger replacement works are on schedule to begin on the 4th
September.
Completion will be October 2024 followed by a painting programme to start at the back end of the replacement works
and continue to August 2025. Both lanes should reopen in March 2025.
Work will be suspended and traffic management lifted over the Christmas periods. The work is being paid for by UK
Highways A55.
“I thank everyone for a comprehensive update on what will happen and I know islanders and those who travel regularly
to Anglesey will want to know what will happen over the next two years,” said Virginia.
“There is going to be disruption really until 2025 to ensure the bridge is safe and fit for purpose ahead of its
200th anniversary. This is something for the island to celebrate but it also very much highlights how we are relying on
a structure built in the early 19th century to connect us.
“This needs to change and it’s why I support a third Menai crossing. I urge Labour in Cardiff to think again about its
ridiculous ban on road building, listen to islanders and get a third crossing built.”
