I would like to clear up any confusion regarding opposition day debates.
There are 20 Opposition day debates in each session - today is number 14.
As you would expect the title of the debate is often deliberately provocative to embarrass the Government.
Opposition day debates are discussions in the Chamber - giving the
Opposition opportunities for divisive headlines and social media clips saying that I voted against or abstained on something - which is why you hear a lot about them in the press.
Todays opposition day debate is Water quality and sewage discharge.
It is important to highlight that this is England only as in Wales environmental issues and sewage are devolved to Labour in Cardiff.
We have tabled an amendment to Labour's sewage motion today.
'That this House calls on the Government to set a target for the reduction of sewage discharges, to provide for financial penalties in relation to sewage discharges and breaches of monitoring requirements, and to carry out an impact assessment of sewage discharges.'
We will also be announcing that we will be setting our targets into law, ensuring they are deliverable and cost-effective for bill-payers. This is in sharp contrast to Labour who have a completely uncosted proposal which will triple water bills by the end of the decade.
