Virginia in Westminster Hall

I was the first in my family to stay on at school beyond the age of 16. Working in pubs and restaurants helped me fund my sixth form and University. I know how important tips are.

My Employment Allocation of Tips bill is about ensuring when a tip is paid by a customer via credit card - it goes to the staff. It is what the customer expects and it’s what the staff deserve.

In Wales tourism and hospitality is one of our most important sectors representing 12% of all jobs. Tourism in Wales is devolved to Labour in Cardiff.

Hourly wages in this sector are one of the lowest of any industry and this bill will make a difference; this bill will potentially benefit over 2.5 million workers across the UK. The bill is supported by the union Unite and Kate Nicholls CEO UKHospitality.

I am proud to say that this bill passed through the House of Lords on Friday - special thanks to The Rt Hon. Lord Robathan - and it will now be one of the first Bills to gain Royal Assent by King Charles.

Big shout out to Dean Russell MP the MP for Watford for everything he has done to bring this important bill forward.

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
