World Water Day

Today is #WorldWaterDay, an annual United Nations Observance, started in 1993, that celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people currently living without access to safe water.

It has been previously misreported that UK government, including myself, voted to pump sewage into our waters.

This is absolutely untrue – as a responsible citizen, a member of the Conservative Environment Network and as MP of an island community, I would never vote for that.

It is the Welsh Government who are responsible for the natural environment in Wales, including overflow discharge into the seas around Wales, which only happens in exceptional circumstances.

Despite this, in February I met with Rebecca Pow, the minister for nature recovery and the domestic environment to discuss issues around flood defences and how the UK government is working with Welsh government on water pollution.

I want to ensure that the issue of sewage overflow into the sea waters around Anglesey is being taken seriously by the Welsh Government and that they are doing all they can to tackle it.

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
