Anglesey Skills Day in partnership with Grŵp Llandrillo-Menai showcased the breadth of companies on the island and how these businesses are using the apprenticeship scheme to train and develop a local workforce.

I am doing all I can to make Anglesey a fantastic place for everyone to live - especially our young people. A big part of achieving this is for the island to be home to 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆-𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 and 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 jobs.

There is so much potential on Ynys Môn for renewable, nuclear and even hydrogen energy, a freeport or to grasp the investment opportunities that will come with Levelling-Up.

We had some fantastic employers and their apprentices attending the event including Babcock International Group, who attended with apprentices Stephanie and Ryan. Babcock Apprenticeships have an Aeronautical Engineering Apprenticeship Scheme based at RAF Valley on Anglesey in partnership with Grŵp Llandrillo-Menai.

The scheme so far has seen 61 apprentices training at RAF Valley with Babcock Group, the vast majority of whom continue to develop their careers with the company.

Nick Colin York, Managing Director at Holyhead Marine, an international boat building company based in Holyhead attended with current apprentice Connor Williams.

The Rhosneigr institution - the The Oyster Catcher Restaurant's General Manager Tommy Hughes also attended with their apprentice Paige Jones who did a brilliant interview with the BBC on my new Tips Bill.

We were also joined by the fantastic Kerry and Kirsty from Carelink Homecare Services Ltd, a North Wales company that supports individuals across Ynys Môn to live independently in their own homes.

Steven Richard Jones, Managing Director and Gethin Huw Williams, Apprentice Mechanical Engineer, represented Mona Lifting Ltd. Ivan Baldwin and Mike Higgins from Bechtel Corporation also attended with Nuclear Apprentice Lucy.

Isle of Anglesey County Council ( Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn), attended with trainees Steffan and Rhys. The council employs apprentices in a wide range of trades from plumbing and heating to customer service and management.

Diwrnod Sgiliau Môn / Anglesey Skills Day was also sponsored by some huge corporate companies, a testament to their faith in the island, Diolch yn fawr to those sponsors, Bechtel Corporation, Sizewell C, Last Energy Read Construction and WSP.

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
