Chancellor of the Exchequer

I welcome the news that Stena Line and Isle of Anglesey County Council have today submitted their Outline Business Case, an important step in the development of the Anglesey Freeport project.

For years, I have campaigned for Anglesey to be granted Freeport status - a once in a generation opportunity to bring forward new, high skilled jobs, as well as bring forward transformational investment in our communities.

Freeport status is vital to the long-term economic success of North Wales, with Anglesey Freeport not only set to make our region more internationally competitive, but also act as a magnet of retaining young people and talent to our local communities, help preserve the Welsh language and retain our proud culture.

I was delighted to see Chancellor Jeremey Hunt extend Freeport tax reliefs in England at the recent Autumn Statement, and will continue to work with him and UK Government to ensure these extensions are realised in Wales – enabling businesses to have confidence to invest in Anglesey for the long term.

I congratulate all those who have worked tirelessly on submitting a strong and robust Outline Business Case, and look forward to seeing the project’s continued progression.

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
