The British Energy Security Strategy will scale up and accelerate clean, affordable and secure energy made in Great Britain – from North Sea oil and gas to nuclear and offshore wind.

This includes a significant new approach to nuclear energy by delivering eight new reactors in the UK, at the pace equivalent to one a year instead of one a decade. Under the plans 95 per cent of electricity will be low carbon renewables like wind, solar and hydrogen by 2030.

This will ultimately bring down bills through boosting supplies of home-grown energy, reduce our gas imports, strengthen our energy security and create good quality jobs. The export opportunities are immense and for the first time in generations we are well placed to seize them – we need Rolls-Royce plc orders for SMRs in the UK to boost advanced manufacturing jobs.

As Chairperson of the Nuclear Delivery Group I have championed the case for both SMRs and new nuclear at Wylfa to be bought to Ynys Môn. I am working with prospective developers, Bangor University and Grŵp Llandrillo Menai to ensure our young people are primed and ready to take advantage of the new job opportunities that new nuclear on Anglesey will bring.

New nuclear will provide a future for our children and boost our local economy - keeping our communities, language and culture alive.

Delivering New Nuclear to Ynys Môn

I am delighted that, after much hard work, on 22 May 2024 the UK Government gave a firm commitment to a gigawatt new nuclear plant at Wylfa. Following the purchase of the Wylfa site by Great British Nuclear (GBN) in March 2024, this latest announcement gives local people the secure and stable futur

Driving Net Zero from Energy Island

The Energy Island programme was launched by Isle of Anglesey County Council with support from Welsh Government in 2010.  Unfortunately we produce less energy on Ynys Môn and employ fewer people in the energy sector now than we did when the programme started.  With the UK Government, I want

Local Jobs for Local People

The UK Government was elected on a manifesto to take us out of the EU and level up the UK.  Levelling up means making sure that areas of the UK that have been underfunded in recent years – like Ynys Môn – get inward investment so that our young people have the same opportunities as more prosper

Ensure Ynys Môn is front and centre of government policy

For years Ynys Môn has been poorly represented in Westminster by our MPs.  Our island needs someone fighting its corner and making sure that the people in power know and understand our local issues and assets.  My fights for Wylfa and a Freeport are well documented but I have also been wor

New nuclear at Wylfa?

New nuclear is the most reliable, clean, low carbon and consistent energy generating technology currently available and Wylfa is a key UK site with potential for both large and small reactors which would generate more than 9,000 construction jobs and 900 steady-state careers.  I am working wit

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
