Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie invited an RAF Valley Apprenticeship mentor to Downing Street to meet the Education Secretary at the Local skills Champions Reception.

Bethan McCrohan is a training coordinator for defence company Babcock International at the base and she has helped lots of young people access apprentices and move onto a career.

Born and bred on the island, she was picked by Virginia to go through the famous black front door with her on Tuesday for the event hosted by Gillian Keegan.

In addition to recruiting apprenticeships, Bethan also supports Careers Wales with careers events at the base and at local schools, highlighting the opportunities available with Babcock International at RAF Valley and the broader Aerospace business. She works closely too with Grwp Llandrillo Menai promoting apprenticeships.

“It was an honour to take Bethan into Downing Street to be given the credit she deserves helping young people on our island go into good training and jobs,” said Virginia.

“Giving young people on Anglesey the skills they need in high-tech and well-paid locations like RAF Valley and with companies like Babcock allows them to stay here and not have to go off island for work.

“I would like to thank Bethan for taking the time to come down to London. I hope she enjoyed the evening and I know she will continue the work she is so passionate about.”

Bethan said: “I really enjoyed my visit to Downing Street as it was great to meet with others who are also passionate about giving local people the opportunity to develop specialist skills and hopefully life-long careers.”

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
