Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie dropped into Llangefni delivery office on Friday to meet up with posties and talk about the job.

Virginia met with Customer Services Operations Manager Lee Thornton and his team of Alun Roberts, Arwel Griffith, Ian Hargreaves, Edward Jones and Julie Ann ‘Bunnie’ Hughes.

Virginia worked as a postie to finance her university career – so understands how important it is to keep the hardworking Royal Mail delivery team safe and out delivering.

She heard first-hand experiences of knocking on doors and delivering letters and parcels in a rural community where there are many dogs.

The visit was ahead of Royal Mail holding its tenth annual Dog Awareness Week this week with an event in Westminster. Thousands of posties are bitten each year.

“As an MP one of the most important parts of my role is communicating with my electorate by knocking on doors and delivering leaflets – and although I have not personally been bitten – I know from others how frightening and painful it can be,” said Virginia.

“As a former postie, I share the Royal Mail’s concerns about it can be a dangerous job if dogs are loose and people are not responsible dog owners.

“Speaking to Lee and his staff made it clear this is still a big problem we need to tackle. I hope the awareness week will encourage dog owners to keep their pets away from posties and others who deliver to homes.

“Many thanks to Lee and his team for a warm welcome. Our posties are just great. What would we do without them.”

Lee added: “I was great to have Virginia back for a visit and engaging with staff and talking and listening to what they had to say about dogs and many other subjects.

“She is always welcome to drop by for a chat.”

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
