Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie has shown a high-powered South Korean delegation around the Wylfa nuclear power site as she continues her work to bring investment to the island.
The chief executive and president of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) Kim Dong Cheol and his senior management team spent two days with Virginia last week to visit the site – one of the best places in Europe to build large-scale nuclear power.
The company also came in the summer to Anglesey for an initial scoping visit but this time senior executives from the company visited after Virginia invited them.
The president of South Korea – officially called the Republic of Korea - is in the UK this week to meet with the Prime Minister and KEPCO was part of that delegation.
KEPCO has built advanced large-scale nuclear power stations in Korea and abroad and is looking to expand its operations to the UK.
“I was delighted to host the senior team from KEPCO on our island last week and show them the potential we have for large-scale nuclear power at Wylfa and how the new freeport I helped secure would help with that investment,” said Virginia.
“This is a world-class company that is very keen on entering the UK nuclear market, building a relationship with the UK government, and putting spades in the ground.
“It is important that KEPCO understands how supportive I am of its ambitions and more importantly, how supportive the island is to have new nuclear at Wylfa.
“The visit was a great success. The delegation saw quite a bit of the island too. They stayed at the Trearddur Bay Hotel, ate at Ocean’s Edge, Bay View Restaurant and the Sea Shanty Café and met with the Horizon team at Wylfa.”
Virginia also met up with KEPCO in London this week at the UK-Korea Nuclear Industry Partnership event where she made a key-note speech along with the nuclear minister Andrew Bowie.
Kim Dong Cheol thanked Virginia for the invitation and her “avid interest in our endeavours to support the UK in delivering its nuclear energy ambitions.”
“Wylfa is a site that KEPCO is keenly looking into,” he added.
