I'm asking all general election candidates on the island to sign up to a Kinder Campaign pledge ahead of the country going to the polls this year.
I have been subject to abuse and several death threats because of my role as Anglesey’s MP and an election campaign free of personal attacks and unpleasantness, especially on social media, would be approved of by voters.
Politics has certainly become more divisive over the last few years and I do not believe social media helps much either.
But we can change that tone here on Ynys Môn by all signing up to a ‘Kinder Campaign’ pledge
It would mean focusing on the issues that matter to voters here on the island and not personal attacks - something I know most people do not like to see from candidates anyway.
We can then, as an island, buck the trend towards division and dislike that seems to have taken root in the country when the general election is called.
The fact I need to wear a stab vest to surgeries and that MPs are quitting parliament because of attacks on them and their offices all means we need to have a kinder political discourse.
And we should not forget that two MPs – one Labour and one Conservative – have been murdered while at work in their constituencies since 2016.
