I visit Holyhead's Nifty60s exercise group

I visited a Nifty60s exercise group taster session in Holyhead that encourages older people to stay fit and active.

I invited by James Lee from the group for the event at the Holyhead & Anglesey Weightlifting and Fitness Centre on Friday.

I have also written in support of the groupโ€™s bid for National Lottery funding.

The Nifty60s event was part of a local health conversation day alongside BCUHB where members of the public were welcome to drop in to find out more about their local health services, speak to health managers and take part in the exercise session.

Getting fit and active at any age is really important whether that is going for a walk or gardening or getting into the groove with the Nifty 60s.

Many thanks for the group and James for the invite. It is a great community resource helping older people with their physical and mental health.

I hope our older people in Holyhead will consider joining and I am fully behind the quest for extra funds from the National Lottery to expand groups across the island.

The Nifty60s was formed in 2019 by Ray Williams of Hawfc. Rayโ€™s aim was to reduce slips, trips and falls for older people locally and reducing pressure on GP surgeries and A&E Departments.

The group takes part in resistance and functional training, building core strength, flexibility and mobility. The sessions have grown with 30 per class and with an average age of 74.

There are 132 members who are achieving not only improved strength, mobility, flexibility but also improved mental and physical strength.

The group is planning to take the Nifty60s model across Anglesey with up to five hubs with the Virginia-supported National Lottery Funding Stage 2 Application going to panel later this month.
