I invited one of the island’s grassroots football enthusiasts to a Downing Street reception honouring people who bring communities together through sport.
Douggie Fowlie has been a player, a coach, a referee, a committee member, a volunteer and a supporter of Aberffraw Football Club for many years.
He was nominated by myself for the Sports in the Community event last week.
The independent county councillor for Crigyll ward joined the MP to go through the famous back door of No10 for the event.
He met Culture, Media and Sport Secretary of State Lucy Frazer and others from across the country who have made a difference to their communities through sport.
He also had a tour of the Palace of Westminster with Virginia before the event.
I put Douggie Fowlie forward for this special event in recognition of the work he does for our island.
Douggie is a true champion for the beautiful game and understands what grassroots football means to a community.
Many congratulations to an outstanding community champion and I was honoured to nominate him and go with him to No10 to receive the recognition he deserves.
Douggie said: “Thank you very much to Virginia Crosbie for nominating me for the award. It was a great honour to visit 10 Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament.
“It was a surreal day and experience. I’m just a normal lad from Aberffraw, so to be in 10 Downing Street was something I won’t forget.”
