Benllech fish and chip shop owners at Downing Street

The Ynys Môn owners of one of the top fish and chips in the country went to Downing Street this week for the Local Food and Farming Champions Reception.

Carol and Mike Hulme, who run Finney’s Fish & Chip shop in Benllech, went through the famous black door on Tuesday with myself for the event.

The pair met the environment secretary Steve Barclay and others from across the UK who were nominated by their MP to be recognised for the work they do in their communities.

The chippie is a finalist in the Takeaway of the Year category of the National awards by the National Federation of Fish Fryers - the most prestigious awards in the industry.

It was a huge pleasure to take Carol and Mike, who are well-known across the island, to Downing Street for the reception.

Their business employs people, is part of the community and it serves some of the best fish and chips.  I am so pleased they came, met the secretary of state and were recognised for the role they undertake.

And good luck in the awards. I will be delighted if we have an island winner.

Carol said: “Thank you to Virginia for nominating us for this event. It was a pleasure to meet the secretary of state and it is fantastic that he’s backing UK farming - something that affects us all.

“We are a third-generation fish and chip shop, we employ 28 local people and we offer a safe environment for coeliacs to enjoy their fish and chips with over 70% of the menu gluten free and standard.”
