Welcome to my annual review. As your elected representative in Westminster I want you to see that I am accountable for what I do and so I will be publishing an annual report each year to update you on my work.
It has been an unparalleled time for the UK – we have suffered the challenges and constraints of a global pandemic and we have gone through Brexit.
The support provided by the UK Government, both directly and via funding to the Welsh Government, has been critical to maintaining our economic health throughout this period. We are now emerging into a society in which we are taking responsibility for Building Back Better.
Key to this is the UK Government’s commitment to levelling-up our communities. Levelling-up means that places like Ynys Môn, which have for years been starved of investment, can look forward to equality, fairness and a more prosperous tomorrow. We are already seeing tangible results of this commitment on Anglesey in the £4.8m being invested in the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub and the siting of the new HMRC Inland Border Facility at Parc Cybi.
I have engaged with public, private and voluntary sector organisations across the island and beyond. I hold regular meetings to address key local issues with public bodies including the Council, the police and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to ensure we have effective local services and safer streets. From farmers unions to marine energy companies and from Stena to our schools and colleges, I have attended meetings, supported ideas, and worked hard in every way I could to be the responsible and accountable MP you deserve.
With my support and as one of the 100 Priority Places identified in the UK, Anglesey County Council received contingency funding and submitted six local bids totalling £2,666,824 to the UK Community Renewal Fund. I am now looking forward to our island’s
submission to the Levelling Up Fund which supports significant programmes of work valued up to £20m.
I have also been working hard to ensure that new investment and opportunity comes to Anglesey. I hear time and again from people who want good quality, well paid careers on the island for our young people. We want our young people to stay in their
local communities, raise their families here and preserve our Welsh language and culture. This is what I am striving for through my work in Westminster as well as engaging with public and private sector organisations.
I lead the Anglesey Freeport Bidding Consortium. I have been your MP for just short of two years. I am proud of what I have
already achieved on your behalf, and I am determined to do much more. I have also started to learn Welsh – as promised.
I want the world to know that Anglesey is open for business. We are stronger together and I will work with anyone and everyone to ensure that local people have the opportunities they deserve in a responsible manner.
I hope that you enjoy reading this annual report which will tell you more about what I have been doing for Anglesey.
