I met with the Levelling Up Minister - Minister Dehenna Davison to reiterate how important our ยฃ17m Levelling Up bid for Holyhead is.
Angleseyโs Levelling Up bid would make Holyhead Town Centre a visitor destination attracting locals and tourists โ including cruise passengers. The funds would be used to develop local heritage sites and allow town centre shops to reopen offering an attractive place to visit, dwell and โ importantly โ spend money which will boost the local economy.
Holyhead has become an increasingly popular port for visiting cruise ships. This year 37 cruise liners have anchored at sea in the port with over 55,000 cruise passengers.
With Stena Line UKIE reopening the jetty for cruise ships it will make the proposition of visiting Holyhead more attractive than it is currently for both ships and passengers. This would mean an increase in both ships and passengers over the coming years.
Sadly many passengers that come ashore currently are taken away from Holyhead in coaches to visit Snowdonia and other mainland attractions. Few passengers choose to come ashore by launch unless they are going on a coach and those that do venture into the town centre find little in the way of diversion.
The Minister confirmed that we should hear if our bid is successful in the New Year.
