Great to welcome member organisation Confor here to Anglesey.

Confor - Confederation of Forest Industries - supports sustainable forestry and wood - using businesses through political engagement, market promotion and supporting their members.

We discussed high value uses for Welsh timber and how innovation in timber products is a positive growth area for Wales.

Wales is 14% aforested, the sector employs 12,000 people and creates over £600m for the Welsh economy each year.

Confor support partner organisations like Woodknowledge Wales and their members - such as Williams Homes Bala Ltd - to promote access to Welsh timber and raise the profile of the forest industry.

We met at the Pentreath Clwyd Alyn and Williams Homes (Bala) Ltd development of 23 affordable homes for local people where Penny

Lofts the Land and Acquistions Manager kindly showed us around.

The site has been named after the local forest following a competition to name the development by the local school Ysgol Gynradd Pentraeth

I was particularly impressed with the focus on keeping energy bills low for the occupiers - the homes are highly insulated with PV (photovoltaic) panels, batteries and air source heat pumps.

A big shout out to Anthony Geddes National Manager for Confor and Maria Bellissimo their Policy Officer for an excellent morning.

I very much look forward to supporting them going forward.

In this column I usually focus on the ‘bigger picture’ part of my role:   fighting to secure Anglesey Freeport in Westminster because I know how much our young people need the good quality, well paid jobs this will bring,  badgering Ministers, raising the profile of new nucl
