I spoke in a debate this morning - following a marathon Welsh Affairs Select Committee session on ‘Nuclear Energy in Wales’ - to speak in the Westminster Hall debate on ‘Energy Support for off-grid homes’.
The debate was well attended - however disappointingly 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 Labour MP came to lobby the Energy Minister on behalf of their constituents.
"I would like to thank my honourable friend, the Member for Brecon and Radnorshire Fay Jones MP, for bringing this very important matter to Westminster House for debate.
Nearly 60% of my constituents on Ynys Môn rely on off-grid energy for heating. Many of them have been in touch with me about the huge increases in costs they are experiencing. The average cost of filling an oil tank has almost doubled this year and whilst they are grateful for the £100 heating oil payment it is nowhere near enough to support them through a cold rural winter.
Medrwn Môn – our island’s not-for-profit hub – is working with local volunteers like Adrienne Edwards, the Mayor of Holyhead, to set up Warm Rooms across our communities to help those struggling with heating bills to stay warm together.
On behalf of my constituents and those in other rural constituencies across the UK I would urge the Energy Minister to apply a price cap to off-grid heating oil and LPG mirroring that applied to gas and electricity?’"
