I spoke in the UK House of Commons about banning the barbaric import and export of shark fins obtained via โfinningโ.
It is estimated that tens or hundreds of millions of sharks are killed each year through the practice of โfinningโ where they are often landed, have their fin removed and are then returned to the sea where, unable to swim, they slowly drown.
Although the UK banned the landing of fins in 2003, that has not stopped their import. It was estimated that the UK imported about five tonnes of shark fins in 2020.
I fully support this bill which will not only protect our shark populations but show the world that the UK Government is committed to ending this appalling trade.
